The heat of summer has arrived. Beginning mid-June, most of the United States is beginning to reach peak temperatures between 80-100 degrees fahrenheit and will be sustained throughout the late summer months of August and September. When we venture outside during the midday and early afternoon hours, whether it is for work, vacation, or even running errands, exposure to increased levels of summer heat can increase the risk for health issues. A few examples of these are: sunburn, excess sweating, skin rashes, increased acne and breakouts, fatigue, and more serious conditions such as heat exhaustion.
Balancing our time in the summer heat allows us to make the most of the season. Too much time in the sun, especially at midday, along with our busy lifestyle, increased stress, and internal heat increasing foods, throws our internal organ system out of balance, which can lead to bigger problems in the future.
This summer, bring more awareness to your body, your environment, and plan accordingly so you are able to have the most fun this summer, worry free.
5 suggestions to stay healthier this season:
- Spend the most amount of time outside in the early morning and late evening hours.
- Take a short rest during 11am-3pm when the Heart and it’s partner organ the Small Intestine are working the hardest.
- Bake, broil, steam, or quickly sauté foods for the most benefit.
- Limit grilled and barbecued foods to summer outings and parties
- Add more cooling foods to your summertime menu to balance the body.
